Welcome to the Urban Needs in Teacher Education-
Indiana University Bloomington Chapter website!
Urban Needs In Teacher Education is a non profit organization dedicated to supporting and preparing urban teachers to be effective catalysts for student and school improvement and community empowerment. UNITE believes the only way one can become a great teacher is to teach. Experience is the ultimate professional development. Statistics will show that the most successful urban schools are those with the lowest teacher mobility rates. Teachers in these schools stay long enough to learn about their students’ community and culture, build relationships with other staff, families, and community partners, and
reflect on their practice each year.
The premise behind UNITE is simple: give urban teachers the time needed to be successful in the classroom. Many teachers with great ambitions and potential leave urban school districts or the teaching professional all together after their first few years in the classroom. UNITE believes that with catered professional development, mentoring and networking, and community immersion events, teachers will be able to overcome the early challenges of urban teaching, stay teaching at their school lowering school teacher mobility rates, and making an invaluable impact on their students and our urban districts.
UNITE relies on experienced urban teachers and administrators to lead professional development and mentor young teachers as they battle the early challenges of urban teaching.
